The second film, "The Bourne Supremacy", released in late 2004, had Matt Damon playing the same character as before. "The Bourne Identity" was released in early 2002 and had another amnesiac super-assassin named Jason Bourne. The film was rated PG-13 for violence and action, but nevertheless did quite well. The main character was pursued by the CIA, the French government, and others who were trying to get to him before he could get back to his old self.
All of these films take place in an alternate universe where espionage is nearly non-existent, leaving all of the action focused on CIA agents chasing super-assassins that are able to seemingly dodge bullets with ease. According to "The Bourne Ultimatum" script pages released in 2007, this is because in this universe super-assassin teams are no longer an option. All of the films in this franchise take place in the same alternate universe.
The creators of "The Bourne Ultimatum" were planning to make the fourth film, but instead decided to continue the franchise with a spin-off action franchise starring a brand new super-assassin. This marks the end of what is by and large considered to be one of Hollywood’s most successful action franchises based on an amnesiac super-assassin.
Many fans protested this decision, even though there was nothing else for them to watch. The last film in the "Bourne-verse" took over for what used to be known as "the Bourne movies".
